New York has Fifth Avenue. Chicago has Michigan Avenue. And Philadelphia has Walnut Street. All are some of the top retail destinations in the country in terms of rents charged per square foot. And you know if the rents are high on Walnut Street then the stores are going to be high-priced as well. Walnut Street's the sort of place where retailers set up shop just so they can say they're in the area's premier shopping district.

That area is also referred to as Rittenhouse Row—in much the same way as Michigan Avenue is referred to as the Magnificent Mile. Philly's retail gem is named after the community in which it's located, Rittenhouse Square, which itself is named after the famous park in the middle of the area.

From its earliest days, the community was known as an upscale area. Having a house, facing the park itself was a status symbol. Most of those large houses are gone now replaced by high-rise condos and co-ops. The few houses remaining have been sectioned off as apartments. But the area is still a draw for the well-to-do and the high-end retailers have followed.

Walnut Street is Rittenhouse Square's Main Street, but other businesses can be found on the area side streets, including the ones with frontage on Rittenhouse Square. The official eastern end of Rittenhouse Row starts at the intersection of Walnut and Broad Streets, although there is more retail if you continue heading east on Walnut.

At the intersection of Walnut and Broad, Rittenhouse Row is anchored by The Shops at Bellevue, a small indoor mall built inside the historic Bellevue hotel. There's also a food court inside if you're looking for a quick snack. Many of the stores along Rittenhouse Row are chains. However, as you head further west, the rents go down, so that's where to go to find the more unique stores.

But the neighborhood's real treasure is Rittenhouse Square, the city park in the center of the district. Besides the usual people watching, you'll find the park is loaded with unique sculptures. Don't expect to see too many street performers. Residents have complained about them and there has been some controversy over whether the city has a right to force them out.

Retail Hours

Although the area has many stores you'd see in a typical mall, don't expect typical mall hours. Most stores are open seven days a week but they usually close by dinner time.

Parking

Parking is tight but there are pay garages in the area. Just follow the signs. Also, traffic can be heavy so don't spend too much time circling the block for that perfect spot.

Restrooms

Public restrooms can be found at the Shops at Bellevue food court.

Directions

Rittenhouse Row is located just southwest of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's Center City. It is about one hundred miles from both New York City and Baltimore, Maryland.

From I-95, take exit 17 to South Broad St. (Pennsylvania Route 611) northbound. Go about three and a half miles. Turn left at Lombard St. Turn right at S. 18th Street. This will lead to the intersection of 18th and Walnut Streets, the center of Rittenhouse Row. The park will be on your left.

Rittenhouse Row is also accessible by the 15th/16th Street Station on the PATCO subway line, the Walnut-Locust Station on the Broad Street subway line and the 19th Street Station on the Market-Frankford subway line.
