There's a little something for everyone on South Street in Philadelphia.
There's a little something for everyone on South Street in Philadelphia.

Pennsylvania is known as the Keystone State primarily due to its location amongst the original thirteen colonies. Located squarely in the north, one could make the argument that Pennsylvania played a "key" role in the Industrial Revolution with industrial towns featuring steel mills and factories strung across the state. But that belies the state's key role in agriculture as well. Lancaster and Chester counties both contribute a large portion to the state's significant agricultural output.

Anchoring either side of this keystone are two large and vastly different cities. Philadelphia stands on one side as a major commercial center and the mid point of the Boston-Washington megapolis. To the west is Pittsburgh, an Industrial Revolution city in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, struggling against the challenges of a rust-belt city in the twenty-first century. Between the two are various hamlets and steel towns.

Many of these areas make for interesting Main Streets. Gettysburg is famous for the Civil War battle that took place just steps away from its doorstep. But the town itself is also an excellent place for dining and browsing through stores. The annual crafts fair in August is a good time to do some power shopping in the town of Lititz. And being in the heart of mushroom country, Kennett Square celebrates Pennsylvania's agricultural roots.

The city of Philadelphia itself is home to numerous Main Streets that make for great shopping trips. Here you'll find the upscale streetcar suburb of Chestnut Hill in the northwest part of the city. Manayunk is a historic canal village that's now home to an impressive design district. Rittenhouse Row, close to Center City is the area's answer to Fifth Avenue. Nearby South Street is the funky part of town with an exciting night life.

Philly's suburbs also offer numerous shopping destinations. You can explore Ardmore and West Chester, two communities in the tony Main Line area. But that's not all. Our site is still growing and there are plenty of places yet to be added, including several towns in Bucks County north of Philadelphia.
