Sitting on Florida's Gulf Coast, the small city of Dunedin has a lot more going for it than just its quaint downtown. The city was founded by Scottish families, and its name comes from the Scottish-Gaelic name for Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. The city is known for its annual Highland Games and Festival, which is held in nearby Highland Park just a short drive from Dunedin's downtown. Also located in Dunedin is Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island, frequently listed as one of the best beaches in America.

With its shops, restaurants, and inns, Downtown Dunedin makes a perfect stop or even a starting off point for anyone visiting the area. The downtown runs along Main Street from the Gulf of Mexico to Milwaukee Avenue. While Main Street runs east and west, Broadway runs north and south and also features many businesses, particularly art galleries and home design stores. The intersection of these two streets form the heart of downtown. Other shops can be found on the Douglas Avenue, Highland Avenue, and Virginia Lane.

Many of the businesses on Main Street include antique stores, clothings stores, and gift shops. Along with the restaurants, you'll also find several taverns and clubs to give the area a bit of nightlife. The window shopping is only broken up in a couple of spots, including one where a glass office building and parking lot face the street, but otherwise the town is very walkable.

Speaking of which, the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail runs north and south through town perpendicular to Main Street. The old railway turned trail provides ample recreation for walking, jogging, or biking. In fact, the stretch through Dunedin is featured as one of the few locations along the trail that is well lit at night. Several businesses in the area cater to visitors taking advantage of the trail, including a coffee house located in a renovated boxcar, reminiscent of the trail's railway past.

If you're feeling adventurous, you can take the trail north about ten miles to nearby Downtown Tarpon Springs. That area tends to be a bit quieter than Downtown Dunedin but Tarpon Springs' Sponge Docks is bustling and well worth a visit. Both areas are also featured on our site. Either way, Downtown Dunedin is a great stop for anyone visiting this stretch of Florida's beautiful Gulf Coast.

Location

Dunedin is located on the Gulf Coast of Florida in Pinellas County, making it part of Florida's Sun Coast region. Dunedin is about 25 miles north of St. Petersburg, about 25 miles west of Tampa by way of the Courtney Campbell Causeway, and only 10 miles south of nearby Tarpon Springs.

Dunedin's Main Street is actually called Main Street. The western end of Main Street is at the Gulf of Mexico waterfront. Main Street continues east and turns into a highway which connects to U.S. Highway 19, the main highway in the area. However, the part of Main Street that is in Downtown Dunedin runs from the Gulf of Mexico to Milwaukee Avenue. Other shops are located on sidestreets and on Broadway, the main north-south road that runs through Downtown Dunedin.
