Alexandria, Virginia's waterfront development plan runs into opposition.

June 14, 2011

Alexandria, Virginia has had a plan in the works for years to redevelop its waterfront. The plan includes parks with walkable pathways (like boardwalks) that connect to the river. Also in the plans are hotels and an additional 125,000 square feet of development. The plan would give the public direct access to the riverfront from King Street, Alexandria's Main Street. However, as the Washington Post reports, there are several roadblocks to the plan becoming a reality. First, private businesses, including a boat club have balked at having their land turned into a park. Also, community organizations are fighting the plan as being overly ambitious and placing too much development directly on the waterfront.
