An improvement plan is needed for downtown Reisterstown, Maryland.

June 6, 2011

In 2008, an improvement plan was approved for Reisterstown, Maryland's Main Street. However, due to a myriad of reasons, including the economy, the plan never really got off the ground. An article in the Baltimore Sun outlines the issues facing the merchants in Reisterstown and the difficulty they have in getting them addressed. Some of the issues include dangerous traffic and a lack of parking. Also, some want to change the zoning process to allow for more waivers to make it easier for new businesses to move in while still preserving the historic character of the town. Zoning changes may not by itself cost the county money and could be easy to implement. Traffic calming measures could be a bit more difficult. Right now, Reisterstown Road is a busy highway that turns into Reisterstown's more narrow Main Street as it heads north. However, due to the high rate of speed at which some vehicles travel, the Main Street has a highway feel to it, making it difficult and sometimes dangerous to cross the street, which can kill a lot of the strolling and window shopping necessary for a Main Street to survive.
